What Really Matters

Zechariah 14:1-21

Revelation 20:1-15

Psalm 148:1-14

Proverbs 31:8-9

We worry about a lot of things. We have a lot of things on our minds. And it's really cool that God cares about all of them...because He really really doesn't have to.

He doesn't have to care because He's on such a different level than we are...but also because the things we worry about so do not matter. We don't even need to worry about the things we worry about.

When I read about the day "the Lord will be king over the whole earth." The day "there will be one Lord and his name the only name." I wonder what I've been preoccupied with since the last time I thought about that. That's it! Jesus! He's everything.

I was reminded today of a few conversations I've had with my best friend, Sarah. I thought of one in particular when we talked about how its important for us to have an awareness that we have a voice. And the only thing we can believe is good and right to do with our voice is to proclaim Jesus and to give voice to the voiceless.

We may worry and want to live comfortable lives but that is so backwards when we think that whatever power, whatever privilege, whatever voice, whatever we have to give ought to be given back to Jesus and it ought to be given to those who have not.

Proverbs 31:8-9

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

On that day...the day the Lord is king over all the earth...the things we have done will either matter or they will not. The only thing I can think to do with my voice that matters would be to proclaim Jesus and to defend the poor and the needy.

What else is there to do?

I think that's a good thought to be reminded of, for myself, entering into a new year as I think of making New Year's Resolutions....

Jesus, how can I use my voice in a way that really truly matters in 2018? How can I use my voice in a way that lasts eternally?
